This role is for some of the most dedicated Volunteer Squad members who understand all aspects of hobbyDB. They are responsible for a segment of the database, like a Brand such as Barbie or a database item type like Decoys. Coordinators are the main contact for the hobbyDB product team to understand new or changing requirements for their segments. There is only a need for a Coordinator once there are a number of Squad members working on a certain segment (i.e. there is a need to coordinate). If the segment is large and many Squad members are working on it a 2nd or even 3rd Coordinator can be added. The appointment of a Coordinator shows that a segment is maturing and their most important role is to ensure that the team for the segment remains active even if some team member are leaving from time to time.
Coordinators can also invite and promote existing Squad members, in effect planning / coordinating large segments of the database. Coordinators work together (with input from the rest of the Squad) to define conventions and standards for their database segments, and they also help train new Squad members.
Coordinators also can do some limited bulk edits (more to come here), merge Database Items, merge Subjects, and remove images. The tools to merge Database Items and Subjects and remove images are, for now, limited to this role since those actions are not reversible.
How do I become a Coordinator?
Coordinator is an invite-only role and with great power, comes great responsibility. Squad members who are considered for the Coordinator role have several traits:
- They're a Volunteer Squad member with the Champion role
- They have been a Volunteer Squad member for at least two years
- They have added 500 items to the database or 5,000 price points to the price guide
- Their work doesn't need correction by other Squad members
- They have good people skills
- They're a good communicator
- They're willing to mentor fellow Squad members
This is a long list, but it's essential to ensure that those willing are the right fit for the Coordinator role. Once these requirements are met, the current Coordinators and admins will have a round table discussion about potential applications for Coordinators and then decide if it's a good fit and the right timing.
The number of available Coordinator positions is limited to one or two for each database segment so we can avoid the challenges that can come from having too many cooks in the kitchen (this is a new restriction, so some segments currently have more Coordinators). That means that if you are not selected it does not reflect poorly on you! We have many incredible Squad members who are ready and could be amazing Coordinators, but there just may not be an open position.
