The hobbyDB catalog is powered by community members just like you. Our loyal community is passionate about making accurate information on every collectible accessible to everyone and always accepting of new members (that’s you!) to join us in our task of cataloging every collectible imaginable.
Four simple options when adding an item to your collection.
Before adding an item to the catalog, first make sure that the item you want to add is not already in the catalog.
Option #1: If the item is already in the catalog.
Step 1: Simply click “Add to Collection”.
Step 2: Fill out the condition of the item itself, the condition of the packaging, and a few details on Storage Location, Date Purchased, or any other personal information that you can use as a reference later on.
Option #2: Your item is not already in the catalog, but your item’s variant is.
Step 1: A helpful trick to finding an item’s variant is to search the database for an item with similar characterics. For example: you could search for the particular set or series that your item was released in and see if you can’t find a variant this way. You can find more information on what exactly a variant is on our FAQ page.
Step 2: Once you run the search, it can be a little ambiguous trying to determine whether these items are variants of your item or not. Check out the FAQ if you’re having trouble.
Step 3: Once you find that item’s variant, you click the “Add Variant” button.
Step 4: This will take you to a pre-filled listing form, where you can make whatever changes that separate your item from the variant! Don’t forget to add some high-quality photos as well!
Step 5: Now that you’ve created the catalog item, click the “Add to Collection” button and set the condition and packaging of your collectible.
Option #3: If your item is not already in the catalog AND you can’t seem to find a variant of your item.
Step 1: Don’t fret. You can still upload your item fairly easily by searching for an item that is similar to your item, but not necessarily a variant. This can be done by searching for an item that is made by the same brand, or has similar external characteristics.
Step 2: Once you run the search, it can be a little ambiguous trying to determine whether these items are variants of your item or not. Take a gander at our FAQ if you’re having trouble.
Step 3: Once you find an item similar enough (but not a variant!) to your item, find the “Clone Catalog Item” button on this item page and you’ll be taken to a new pre-filled item page where you change the distinguishing characteristics that make your item different.
Step 4: Once you create the item page, add the item to your collection the same way you would add any other item.
Option #4: Last Resort! Your item is not already in the catalog, you can’t find the variant, AND cloning another item is out of the option.
If your item is truly unique in the sense that it doesn’t have a variant and you can’t exactly clone a separate catalog item then your last option to upload your item manually. Using the “Add to Catalog” button next to the search bar, select the correct item type from the list provided, and fill in the appropriate item details required in the subsequent pages.
