Guidelines for Grouping Hot Wheels Castings

The following are guidelines/suggestions for Grouping variants of Hot Wheels castings on hobbyDB.

  1. Before beginning to group your casting, ensure that duplicate items are merged together and all the different versions of the casting are linked as variants of each other. – If merging is required, flag the item as ‘Duplicate Catalog Entry’. A hobbyDB admin will merge the item(s) and perform any variant linking required for the casting. – If items require variants to be created/linked, flag the item as ‘Other’. A hobbyDB admin will create/link the variants. (hobbyDB will shortly be adding a specific “Needs variant editing” flag for this purpose and a free text field where any further explanation can be entered).
  2. Once you have all variants linked together and duplicate items are all merged, click on one of the catalog entries of the casting.
  3. You should now see the item you selected at the top left corner of the Variants section on the page.
  4. Scroll down the page to the Actions section and click on the ‘Group Variants’ button
  5. You will see three blue buttons at the top of the page; “Add Variant Group”, “Reorder Variant Groups” and “Put Variants in Groups”. Click on ‘Add Variant Group’
  6. For Redline era castings (1968-1977) enter the following group names (if applicable), and click ‘Save’ after entering each group name. You will see a green success message at the top that states “Variant Group successfully created” each time a new group name has been saved. Repeat as necessary. The Custom Volkswagen page is a good example of a casting with Redline Era groupings:
    • Original Hong Kong
    • Original USA (only used from 1968 to 1971)
    • Prototypes
    • Restored/Custom
    • Fakes/Counterfeits
  7. For post-Redline era castings (debut 1978-current) enter the following group names (if applicable), and click ‘Save’ after entering each group name. You should see a green banner at the top that states “Variant Group successfully created” each time a new group name has been saved. Repeat as necessary. The ’57 Chevy page is a good example of a casting with modern groupings:
    • First Release (also include the series name in parenthesis, example 2007 1st Editions or 2008 Modern Classics)
    • Mainlines
    • Treasure Hunts
    • 5 Pack Releases
    • Set Releases (this includes releases that are part of a multi-car set)
    • Playset / Trackset releases
    • Holiday Editions
    • Series that have numerous releases such as 2006 Classics or 2009 Larry’s Garage
    • Promotional (items that promote a certain company/event or was released as part of a promotion)
    • Premium (not mainline/basic releases such as Hall of Fame, Pop Culture, or Affinity)
    • Limited Editions (items with Limited Edition on package)
    • Online / RLC / HWC (items sold online or at hotwheelscollectors.com)
    • NASCAR Themed
    • Convention (items only available for purchase or reference Hot Wheels Conventions)
    • Color Shifters / Changers
    • Packaging (such as Japanese card or international box releases)
    • Code 3 / Customs
    • Errors
    • Fake/Counterfeit
  8. Once you have entered the group names you require for your casting, click on the ‘Put Variants in Groups’ button at the top of the page. 9) On this page you have the ability to ‘move’ your items into their respective groups. Just right click, hold, drag, and drop the item into it’s proper group. Repeat as necessary. When finished, click the gray ‘SAVE’ button at the bottom of the page. 10) To put the groups in the correct order click on the ‘Reorder Variant Groups’ button. You will now see a list of your groups. Right click, hold, and drag the groups into the order you require for your page. When finished, click the blue ‘SAVE’ button.
